According to Relocation, Argentina officially announced on the launch of a citizenship-by-investment program that will allow foreigners to obtain an Argentine passport without going through the standard multi-year naturalization process. The government plans to start accepting applications as early as the 4th quarter of 2026.
The launch of the program was announced on October 2 during Argentina Week in Paris by the Argentine Minister of Economy Luis Caputo and the head of the Cabinet of Ministers Diego Santilli.
The government offers foreigners two main options for participation.
The first is a non-refundable contribution of $350,000 to the state treasury. Argentina.
The second is the purchase of a special government bond in the amount of 800,000 dollars, which will be issued specifically for program participants. The authorities have not yet published the detailed parameters of this security.
The program allows family members to be included.
The husband or wife of the main applicant, as well as unmarried and childless children between the ages of 18 and 25, will be able to obtain citizenship subject to an additional contribution of $100,000 per person.
For a child under the age of 18, the additional contribution will be $25,000. dollars.
Thus, a family of two adults and two minor children will be able to apply for Argentine citizenship under the condition of a total non-refundable contribution of $500,000.
One of the main features of the program is that it is about citizenship, and not about a residence permit or permanent residence for investment.
The legal basis for the new scheme was created back in May 2025, when the authorities amended Argentina's citizenship law and created a special Agency for Citizenship by Investment Programs. His task was to manage such programs and attract foreign capital.
Getting a passport only by transferring money, however, will not succeed. The government promises to carry out extensive vetting of candidates.
The origin of funds, financial transparency of the applicant and possible risks related to money laundering and terrorist financing will be checked. The authorities state that the due diligence procedures will comply with OECD and FATF recommendations. All investments must go through the official financial system.
One more point is important for potential participants: the acceptance of applications has not yet started at the time of the announcement of the program.
The government announced that the program should be operational during the IV quarter of 2026. Therefore, it is premature to transfer funds or pay for the services of intermediaries who already promise a guaranteed receipt of an Argentine passport before the publication of the final procedures, application forms, review terms and parameters of the investment bond.
Argentine citizenship is of interest primarily as a tool for international mobility. The country's passport provides wide visa-free access, in particular to the countries of the Schengen zone, and Argentine citizenship opens up additional opportunities for residence and economic activity within South America thanks to the country's integration into Mercosur.
Before the investment program, foreigners could obtain Argentine citizenship through ordinary naturalization. The new model creates a separate path for wealthy applicants willing to invest significant capital.
Argentina has been preparing the program for more than a year. In May 2025, a decree of President Javier Millay created a legal framework for obtaining citizenship by investment, and in April 2026, the management of a special state agency was appointed. Official financial conditions were made public for the first time on October 2.
