The English certificate has a very convincing look. It contains the name of the international organization, level, score and date. Unlike the
blurred "I speak quite well", it creates a sense of accuracy.
This is why people often start with the question "which exam to take",
although it is more correct to first find out who should see the result and why.
The certificate is evidence for a specific procedure. If a
university, immigration authority, professional association or employer requires
a particular test, the choice is already largely made. When there is no formal requirement, an
exam can be an expensive way to confirm something that a company will
check in an interview anyway.
When a certificate is really indispensable
The most obvious cases are related to training, migration and professional registration.
Universities set minimum scores and sometimes separate
requirements for each skill. Immigration programs accept specific tests and
formats. For regulated professions, for example in medicine, the requirement may be
part of admission to work.
IELTS is widely used in such procedures.
But even here it is not enough to decide "I will take IELTS". It is necessary to
check:
● what type of test the organization accepts;
● what total score is required;
● whether there is a minimum for writing, speaking, reading and
listening;
● how long the result is considered relevant;
● whether online or retaking
of a separate skill is accepted.
The requirements are not determined by the test itself, but the institution to which a person applies. Therefore, the advice of an acquaintance who entered another country two years ago may
be sincere and completely unsuitable.
For employment, the rules are different
In many companies, the certificate is not decisive. If the role
requires regular communication in English, the recruiter or manager will hear
the level during the interview.
A candidate can have a high score and at the same time get lost in the conversation
about their own experience. Another has not passed an international exam, but has been working with
clients for years and easily explains complex solutions.
For an employer, the second proof is often stronger because it is closer
to the real task.
This does not make the certificate useless. It can be useful if
the job directly mentions it, if the company uses standardized requirements
for international mobility or if the candidate needs to confirm the level before
the first conversation. However, adding an exam to a career plan "just in case" is not
always rational.
Preparation time can be spent on business calls,
interviews, writing or professional vocabulary. The choice depends on what barrier
faces the person now.
What happened to BEC
Cambridge English Business Certificates, known as BEC
Preliminary, BEC Vantage and BEC Higher, stopped being held in
most countries. At the same time, the formulation "BEC no longer exists" will be
inaccurate: in China, the exams have remained and take place on a separate schedule.
For a candidate from Ukraine, the practical conclusion is simple.
It is no longer
worth to plan BEC as a usual international exam in business English.
Cambridge offers Linguaskill, in particular
variant Linguaskill Business. This is an online, on-demand test that determines a
level ranging from B1 to C2. The format may be convenient for
organizations that need to assess the English of students, candidates or
employees.
But calling Linguaskill an automatic "official
replacement for BEC" for every purpose is also imprudent. Different institutions accept
different confirmations. Before registration, you need to check whether a particular employer or organization recognizes this particular result.
Cambridge certificate and its
validity period
The results of Cambridge English Qualifications, such as
B2 First or C1 Advanced, do not formally have a set Cambridge
period of validity. The certificate does not "burn" after two years.
However, the organization accepting it may require more recent
proof. This is logical: a person could actively use English after the exam
or hardly practice it for several years.
Therefore, the phrase "perpetual certificate" is only
half correct. The document remains valid, but the university or employer
decides how old the result is comfortable with.
Such a difference between the rules of the test and the rules of the institution is
one of the main reasons why you should not choose an exam based on popularity.
A general exam does not measure all professional
readiness
Result B2 or C1 shows a broad level language proficiency. It is useful because it tests several skills in a standardized manner. But no general test can fully reproduce the specifics of a particular job.
A financial analyst must explain assumptions and risks. The HR
specialist conducts delicate conversations. The developer participates in code review
and discusses compromises. The sales manager works with objections and bargaining.
A person can have the required general level and still
need to practice these scenarios. Similarly, a specialist with uneven skills
sometimes does a great job, even though a formal test will show weaker writing or
listening.
The certificate answers the question "what general level
is demonstrated in the exam environment". It does not always answer the question "is
a person ready to negotiate a contract tomorrow."
When an exam is useful even without a formal
requirement
Sometimes an external goal helps to organize training. The
exam date sets the deadline, the program covers all skills, and the result provides an independent
point of reference.
This may be appropriate if a person wants to systematically improve
general English and appreciates a clear criterion. It is only important to honestly understand
motivation. Then the exam is taken not because "all international companies require a
certificate", but because the format helps to achieve a personal or professional
goal.
There is also a psychological effect. For some, the official result becomes proof of progress and adds confidence. For others, long-term preparation for tasks that do not occur at work turns into a way around a real problem, such as fear of speaking. Both situations are possible. Unfortunately, the paper does not carry out
diagnosis of the owner.
How to choose without unnecessary expenses
Before paying for registration, you should go through a short check.
Which specific organization needs the result?
How does it accept the tests?
What score is needed in general and for each result?
By what date do you need the result?
Is a certificate required, or is an internal test or interview sufficient?
Does the preparation for this exam meet your wider language goal?
With level diagnosis and preparation for the desired format
works school My English. An important part of such preparation is not only the
choice of materials, but also a realistic assessment of the target score and deadline.
A certificate is worth the effort when it opens specific doors or
provides a useful structure to the study. If the employer tests English tomorrow with a
twenty-minute conversation, it is more logical to prepare for this conversation, and not
collect the names of the exams in the Certificates section.
The first question remains not "which test is the best". The first
question is much more prosaic: who will accept the result and what will he allow to be done
after that.
