In Ukraine, bankruptcy cases of individuals increased by 37% in nine months

As reported by Open4Business, in Ukraine for January-September In 2026, 1,293 cases of insolvency of individuals were opened, which is 37% more than in the same period of 2025. The largest number of such proceedings were recorded in Kyiv, Kyiv and Lviv regions, according to the data of the Supreme Court, which was released by the state registry monitoring service "Opendatabot" on October 19.
According to the research, the number of bankruptcy cases of citizens is increasing for the fourth year in a row after decreasing in 2022. In 2021, 496 proceedings were opened, in 2022 - 374, in 2023 - 576, in 2024 - 927, and in 2025 - 1,348.
Thus, in just nine months of 2026, the number of cases exceeded the figure for the whole of 2024 by 39.5% and amounted to almost 96% of the result of the full year 2025.
In total, since the beginning of 2021, 5,014 cases of insolvency of natural persons have been registered in Ukraine.
The largest share of citizens who initiated the bankruptcy procedure in 2026 are people aged 25 to 45. This category accounts for 876 cases, or 67.7% of the total.
A further 304 cases, or 23.5%, concern persons over 45 years of age, while 113 cases, or 8.7%, are opened against citizens under 25 years of age. The youngest applicant is 20 years old, the oldest is 77 years old.
In terms of gender structure, in 2026, for the first time, the predominance of women among participants in such proceedings was recorded: 685 women against 608 men. The share of women was 53%, while in 2025 men were 51%.
In the regional section, Kyiv courts handle the most cases of insolvency of individuals - 228 proceedings. Compared to nine months of 2025, their number increased by 57.2%, from 145 cases.
The second place was taken by the Kyiv region with 130 proceedings, the third place by the Lviv region with 109. These three regions account for 467 cases, or 36.1% of the all-Ukrainian indicator.
In the Kyiv region, the number of proceedings increased by 85.7%, from 70 to 130, and in Lviv region - by 43.4%, from 76 to 109.
Among the regions with a noticeable increase in the number of cases, Kirovohrad region, where the indicator increased by 115%, from 20 to 43 proceedings, Ternopil region - by 64.3%, from 28 to 46, and Kharkiv region - by 59.4%, from 32 up to 51.
At the same time, a reduction in the number of proceedings was recorded in some regions. In particular, in Vinnytsia Oblast, the indicator decreased by 18.2%, from 77 to 63 cases, in Odesa Oblast - by 5.9%, from 68 to 64, and in Mykolaiv Oblast - by 31.3%, from 16 to 11.
The increase in the number of insolvency cases may indicate an increase in the debt burdenon individual households, as well as on more active use by citizens of the debt settlement procedure provided for by law. At the same time, the given statistics by themselves do not allow to determine the reasons for the bankruptcy of each applicant.
Individuals in Ukraine received the opportunity to initiate bankruptcy proceedings in October 2019, after the Code of Ukraine on Bankruptcy Procedures entered into force.
Unlike the bankruptcy of enterprises, proceedings regarding the insolvency of a citizen can be opened only at his own request. Creditors do not have the right to independently initiate such a procedure against an individual.
At the same time, the opening of proceedings does not mean that a person is automatically declared bankrupt or that all his debts are written off. The court procedure may provide for debt restructuring, repayment of creditors' claims through the sale of property, and further release from part of the obligations in cases established by law.
Certain types of debt, in particular alimony obligations, are not subject to write-off as a result of the bankruptcy procedure.
In addition, within five years after being declared bankrupt, a person is obliged to report his status before concluding loan, credit, guarantees or pledges. The re-opening of an insolvency case during this period is also limited by law.
You can check information about the bankruptcy of an individual through the relevant service "Opendatabot" by its tax number.
"Opendatabot" is a Ukrainian service for monitoring open state registers, which provides information about companies, entrepreneurs, court decisions, debt obligations and other legally significant information. The service regularly publishes analytical studies based on state statistics and open data.
