Ukraine sent a consular team to Nepal, where 55 Ukrainians disappeared after the flood

As reported by Open4Business, the Embassy of Ukraine in India, which part-time representative of Ukraine in Nepal, sent two employees, including a consul, to this country to provide assistance to Ukrainian citizens after a large-scale flash flood and landslides in the Rasuva region of Bagmati province.

As reported by the embassy, Ukrainian diplomats will work directly on the spot together with the competent authorities of Nepal, local rescue services and the Honorary Consul of Ukraine. The main task is to establish the location of Ukrainian citizens who have lost contact and provide them with consular assistance.

According to the latest data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, 55 Ukrainian citizens are considered missing as a result of the natural disaster in Nepal. We are talking about two tourist groups of 47 and seven people, as well as one Ukrainian woman who was part of a foreign tourist group. As of August 27, there is no information about the dead or injured citizens of Ukraine.

According to the information received by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine from local authorities, in general, more than 1,100 people, including more than 700 tourists from almost 30 countries, are considered missing after the large-scale flood and landslides. At the time of notification by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, there were at least 165 dead.

The natural disaster occurred on August 26 in the mountain district of Rasuva near the Nepal-Tibet border. A powerful flow of water, stones and soil swept through the valleys of the Bhote-Koshi and Trishuli rivers, damaging settlements, highways, bridges, energy facilities and tourist infrastructure.

According to the latest estimates of experts, one of the probable causes of the disaster could be the collapse of a part of the glacier together with a mass of stones and snow. Rescue operations are complicated by damage to the transport and communication infrastructure.

The embassy called on citizens of Ukraine who are in Nepal to notify diplomats of their location and condition at the first opportunity, to follow the recommendations of local authorities and rescue services and not to visit the affected areas.

Relatives of Ukrainians who have lost contact and who may be in the disaster zone, diplomats are asked to provide information about their last known whereabouts.
