The attitude of Ukrainians towards Belgium in August 2026 improved somewhat compared to the previous wave of the survey: 59.8% of respondents rated the country positively, while only 1.4% rated it negatively. At the same time, more than a third of respondents - 36% - maintain a neutral position, reports the information and analytical center Experts Club.
According to the results of the August survey, 21.1% of Ukrainians have a completely positive attitude towards Belgium, mostly positive — 38.7%. 36% of respondents expressed a neutral attitude. For the most part, only 0.8% evaluate the country negatively, 0.6% completely negatively, another 2.7% could not decide.
The balance of positive and negative evaluations according to the table is plus 58.4 percentage points. Thus, Belgium remains among the Western European states with a distinctly positive perception, and the negative attitude towards it is actually marginal.
In March 2026, positive to Belgium 58.7% of respondents had a positive attitude: 19.3% were completely positive and 39.4% were mostly positive. 37.1% of respondents took a neutral position, 2.3% took a negative position, and another 1.9% could not decide.
So, in five months, the share of positive evaluations increased by 1.1 percentage points. — from 58.7% to 59.8%, while negative ones decreased by 0.9 percentage points. — from 2.3% to 1.4%. The neutral segment also decreased by 1.1 pp. The balance of positive and negative attitudes increased from approximately plus 56.4 to plus 58.4 percentage points.
At the same time, the internal structure of positive responses changed somewhat. The share of completely positive ratings increased from 19.3% to 21.1%, while mostly positive ratings decreased from 39.4% to 38.7%. This means that the overall improvement was small, but some respondents began to evaluate Belgium more clearly positively.
Director of the research company Active Group Oleksandr Poznii previously drew attention to the fact that a significant share of neutral responses to Belgium is not related to a negative perception, but to the peculiarities of the formed image of the country.
"Belgium is perceived by Ukrainians as an important member of the European Union and NATO, a country that stably supports Ukraine on the international stage. At the same time, the relative remoteness and lack of deep historical contacts lead to a high share of neutral assessments," Pozniy explained.
The new wave of research generally confirms this characteristic. The positive segment is gradually expanding, negative assessments remain at a minimal level, but more than a third of Ukrainians still take a neutral position. This indicates a significant potential for the further formation of a more defined image of Belgium through economic, humanitarian, educational and inter-societal contacts.
The previous wave of the study was conducted in March 2026 among 800 citizens of Ukraine aged 18 and over by the method of self-completion of online questionnaires in the SunFlowerSociology panel. The sample was representative in terms of age, gender and region, the maximum theoretical error for indicators at the 50% level was ±3.5 percentage points.
